“After some weeks thinking about it, yesterday I decided I will compete at the Catalan GP”
Lorenzo is going to race again on the factory Yamaha YZR-M1 bike at his home race in Barcelona.
Last year, Lorenzo announced his retirement from racing. After that decision, the five-time World Champion took the role of becoming a test rider for the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team. Now, he received a wildcard to race at the MotoGP Catalan Grand Prix between 5-7 June.
“After some weeks thinking about it, yesterday I decided I will compete at the Catalan GP. I’m really looking forward to it and I’ll see you all there," said Lorenzo.
The rider completed two-days of testing in February at the Sepang shakedown and Official Tests. He finished 20th on the timesheets of Session 3 at the MotoGP Sepang test, 1.348 seconds behind the fastest rider, Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT).
The Yamaha engineers improved the top speed of the 2020 YZR-M1 bike which now is closer in comparison to the 2020 Honda RC213V machine of Marc Marquez. So, it’ll be interesting to see how fast Lorenzo still is in a MotoGP race.
The Spaniard will still perform his test rider role for the Yamaha MotoGP team throughout the 2020 season.
