The recall affects the BMW R1200GS model and BMW R1200GS Adventure
The massive service campaign that started a few weeks ago just turned in to a recall for the US market. Today the NHTSA ( National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ) made the recall official on its public data base.
The fixed fork tubes fitted on both BMW R1200GS and BMW R1200GS Adventure between November 2013 and June 2017 can come off from the upper mounting point. The pressed end that holds the tube connected to the upper triple clamp creates a gap due to high stress. The gap is not always visible as is hidden underneath a rubber grommet, but can be checked by an authorized BMW Motorrad dealer.
A service campaign is undergoing in South Africa and Australia already but only as a service campaign. A worldwide recall will probably be announced this month.
The repair consists of adding additional fork busking or in the case of damaged fork the fork tubes are replaced with new ones. The repairs are free of charge and will affect over 14.000 units in the US.
The Recall will start from September 1, 2017, so make sure to get your GS checked as there is a limited supply of replacement parts.
