Updated engine and new bodywork. What do you think of this design rendering?
This sketch comes from Rémi Darodes of MotoStation and features how a BMW S1000R could look like if the company builds the next generation supernaked. It could lose the asymmetric bodywork while the engine could be tweaked from the current S1000RR superbike. Also, the bike could come with an electronics upgrade.
First things first, this is just an interpretation of how the next generation BMW S1000R could look like. So, there is no official information from the company if we’ll get to see a new supernaked next year.
Last time we’ve seen any technical development for the BMW S1000R model was before 2013. And after that, the bike only had a few design updates and a couple of new paint schemes each year. The supernaked bike as it stands at the moment, even with 165 hp power delivery, lost a lot of ground compared to its rivals like the new Ducati Streetfighter V4 with 208 hp and aerodynamic winglets, the supercharged Kawasaki Z H2 making 200hp and the torque beast KTM 1290 Super Duke R with 180 hp and 140 Nm. And these bikes are just the new or upgraded versions. The supernaked segment has other competitors such as the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory (175hp) and Yamaha MT-10 (160hp). So the competition is fierce in this motorcycle segment and BMW will have at some point need to update the S1000R model. Most likely, the engine upgrade could feature a downtuned version of the power unit fitted on the S1000RR superbike to deliver less hp and more midrange torque.
Moreover, 2021 marks the year when all engines have to be Euro5 compliant. Thus, if a new generation BMW S1000R would come next year, it needs an engine upgrade to bring it to the Euro5 standard. Also, BMW equipped the new S1000XR with an adapted version of the engine fitted on the current S1000RR superbike. Thus, the new engine for the S1000R model could have somewhere around 200hp just to make it in line with its rivals. Other changes could be an upgraded electronics package with new ICU and ECU units, while other tweaks could see the latest cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control, launch control and other goodies.
Nonetheless, the bodywork could also see a couple of changes. If we look at the current S1000XR and S1000RR we can see that they no longer have an asymmetrical design. So, we could see the next generation S1000R model following the same path as the rest of BMW’s motorcycle designs.
I own 2019 S1000r, previous to this Aprilia Tuono rr 2016. Tuono seat shallow so sitting on top, S1kR so much more comfortable. Tuono performance sorry but WOW! S1kR Really Good! Responsive, refined feel, Very Comfortable and the Popping exhaust EXCELLENT FUN! TYERS MAKE THE BIG DIFFERENCE!!! WHY BRIDGIES WHEN YOU CAN CHOOSE SUPER CORSA’S?, Spice it up with Supercorsa’s!! I understand your pic is a glorified super naked example of what it could look like (Not a ducati rip off and more bmw) but please keep the longer reach from seat to handle bars and not squashed up as the elongated feel adds to the speed posture of the rider and comfort which is important. 2020 S1KRR is also a perfect beautiful frame and feel. Dont fix what isnt broken, quality, feel and refinement is BMW, please dont start again. Once BMW gets on the WSBK podium the bike sales will soar. I suggest keep the same chasis, engine upgrade to 200hp, underslung swing arm, change the face/ headlight design, trick up the display screen, trick little wing type design on side fearings and stay bmw quality, feel and refinement with Supercorsa’s! Marry it up close to the SS1KRR maybe as in chasis, frame, engine, tech and face/ lights? Thats a BMW Hyperbike worth copying!!!
I think that if the 2021 BMW S1000R doesn’t look like this, BMW should hire you to design the 2022 model!
