SHARP – an Useful Motorcycle Helmet Safety Rank Checker

SHARP - an Useful Motorcycle Helmet Safety Rank Checker 1

Is your helmet safe enough? Here’s a tool to find out.

Sharp just passed the 400 helmet safety ratings milestone. It’s been ten years since Sharp provides independent safety rankings.

Some of you are familiar with Sharp Helmet Safety Scheme. But for those who don’t know yet, Sharp is an independent agency funded by the Department for Transport in UK. Sharp stands for Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme.

How the tests are done

The helmets are purchased through high streets retailers, then inspected at the Sharp labs. After that, the helmets are marked and assessed using both linear and oblique impact tests. Then the tested helmet is mounted on a headform that contains sensitive equipment to measure forces seen by the brain. The helmets are then tested on the front, on the left side, on the right side, on the rear and on the crown. There are three different impact speeds. The tests are carried on on both flat and kerbed surfaces. A minimum of 32 impacts are needed for each rating. The results are compared with real world injury data to determine the Sharp rating.

Visit Sharp Website to check the ratings

Since the launch of SHARP in 2007, more than 13,000 impact tests have been carried out to generate the 403 safety ratings. Providing this safety information is likely to have contributed to a 38 per cent drop in motorcyclist fatalities since 2007.
