Honda Goldwing Gets Recalled for Airbag Issues

Honda Goldwing gets recalled for airbag issues 1

The recall affects 2009-2016 Honda Gold Wing models fitted with an airbag system. According to the NHTSA, there’s a life-threatening issue with the Takata airbag systems found on cars and motorcycles. The long-term exposure to high heat or heat cycles can cause the airbag to fail.

Fortunately, the new 2018 Gold Wing Tour Airbag model is not fitted with a Takata made airbag. The recall affects around 900 units produced between 2009 and 2016.  It's the third time the Gold Wing gets recalled for the Takata air-bag related issues.

The problem is that the combination of time, environmental moisture, and fluctuating high temperatures contribute to the degradation of the ammonium nitrate propellant in the inflators. Such degradation can cause the propellant to burn too quickly, rupturing the inflator module and sending shrapnel through the Air Bag and into the vehicle occupants.

All the Air Bag fitted Honda Gold Wing owners will be notified, and the module will be replaced free of charge. If not notified, they can contact the dealer and schedule a service visit.
