Piaggio Ape turns electric. Meet the Ape E-city 1

The three-wheeler comes with battery-swap technology for the Indian market

Ape E-city will be produced in the Piaggio Group’s Baramati factory in the state of Maharashtra. The price for the Indian market is in line with the gas-fuelled model.

The Piaggio Ape E-city was launched in New Delhi alongside Diego Graffi, CEO of Piaggio PVPL (the Piaggio Group’s Indian subsidiary), India's Road Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari, Italy’s Ambassador to India, Vincenzo De Luca, and Amitabh Kant, CEO of Niti Aayog.

The Ape E-city marks the Italian’s brand entry on to the Indian electric commercial vehicle market. It comes with battery-swap technology that allows a flat battery to be replaced with a charged battery in just a few minutes at automated service stations. This is a solution to meet the growing demand for commercial mobility solutions required by inter-city travel in India.

The Indian Government is sustaining electric mobility

For two and three-wheel vehicles, they created the FAME program (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles). The program allows the purchase of electric or hybrid vehicles and gives a reduction of the Goods and Services Tax from 12% to 5%.

The electric vehicle market in India is worth approximately 71 million dollars and is expected to reach 700 million dollars by 2025. Back in September, this year, the Piaggio Group sold in India 142,500 commercial vehicles which means a 5.6% increase in revenues. On India’s three-wheeler market, the Piaggio PVPL had a share of 23.8% and is the leader in the Cargo segment with a share of 42.9%.
